How to deal with caves encountered during water well drilling

During the process of water well drilling, if you encounter underground caves, it will bring many challenges to the construction, and effective treatment plans need to be taken quickly.

When a cave is found, the location, size, filling and other information of the cave should be recorded in detail. If the cave is small and the filling is stable, direct grouting can be used. Select appropriate cement slurry and inject it into the cave through the drill pipe. After the cement slurry solidifies, the stability of the cave area is enhanced before drilling continues.

If the cave is large and direct grouting is difficult to ensure the effect, it is necessary to lower the casing first. Lower the casing of suitable diameter to the top of the cave, and then seal the casing and the well wall to prevent mud from leaking into the cave. Then continue drilling through the casing and cross the cave under the protection of the casing.

For caves filled with unstable materials such as quicksand, pretreatment can be carried out first. For example, a certain amount of crushed stone, clay, etc. are put into the cave to form a stable mixture, and then grouting or other treatment is carried out. During the entire treatment process, the parameters such as mud loss and hole pressure should be closely monitored, and the treatment plan should be adjusted in time according to the actual situation. After the treatment is completed, quality inspection of the treated area is also required to ensure that the subsequent construction of the water well drilling is safe and smooth.
