Drill Bits Wiki Knowledge

How to select a drilling rig bit

1. Stratigraphic condition analysis

Rock properties: Different rock properties have different requirements for drill bits. Soft rock can use drill bits with large slag discharging capacity, while hard rock requires hard and wear-resistant drill bits. Strata with high degree of fragmentation are prone to rock chips, which require drill bits with good slag discharge capacity.

Stratigraphic and hydrological conditions: Groundwater level and water pressure will affect the selection of drilling fluids. Stratigraphy with high water content is prone to well wall collapse, which requires the selection of corrosion-resistant and scour-resistant drill bits.

stratum complexity: Interlayers, faults, etc. in the stratum will increase the difficulty of drilling, and it is necessary to choose adaptable bits, for example, high geostress will easily lead to jamming of the drilling tools, and it is necessary to choose the bits with good rigidity and torsion resistance.

2. Drilling depth

Shallow water wells: you can choose simple structure and low cost drill bits.

Deep water wells: You can need to choose a drill bit with good abrasion resistance and strong impact resistance to ensure the stability and efficiency of drilling.

3. Drill Bit Types

Three-tooth drill bit: suitable for soft rock and medium-hard rock stratum, with lower price.

PDC bit: suitable for hard rock and stratum interface, high efficiency and long life.

Diamond bit: Suitable for ultra-hard rock formation, expensive.

Carbide drill bits: high hardness, wear-resistant, suitable for hard rock and medium-hard rock formations.
