Drill Bits Wiki Knowledge

What is the difference between a DTH hammer bit and a PDC drilling bit

DTH hammer drill bits and PDC Drill Bits are two commonly used drill bits, and they differ greatly in drilling methods, scope of application, advantages and disadvantages.

Dth hammer drill

Working Principle:

Dth hammer drills generate impact force by driving the hammer body through compressed air to break the rock.

Scope of application:

It is mainly used for drilling hard rock and medium hard rock, such as mining, tunneling, water well drilling and so on.

Advantages:

High crushing efficiency, especially suitable for hard rock.
Simple structure, easy maintenance.

Relatively low cost.

Disadvantages:

Loud noise, dusty, high impact on the environment.
Relatively poor drilling quality, rough hole wall.
Higher requirements for equipment, need high pressure air source.

PDC drill

Working Principle:

PDC drill bit adopts diamond polycrystal as cutting edge, cutting rock by rotation.

Scope of application:

It is mainly used for drilling of soft and medium soft rock, such as oil and gas well drilling, geothermal well drilling, etc.

Advantages:

Fast drilling speed, high drilling quality, smooth hole wall.
Low noise, less dust, less impact on the environment.
Strong adaptability, can drill various types of rocks.

Disadvantages:

Higher requirements on equipment, need high speed and torque.
Higher cost, diamond polycrystals are expensive.
Not suitable for hard rock drilling, easy to wear out.
