Why do they rely so much on oil well PDC bits

A PDC Drill Bit for oil wells is a type of drill head that is used a whole lot in the oil and gas world. Its job is to drill holes down through all the different layers of rock underground to get to where the oil and gas are. which is basically the stuff they use to make the sharp parts that do the cutting on the drill bit. Here is a simpler way to get what that means and why these PDC bits are a big deal:

Why do they rely so much on oil well PDC bits

1. How They are Built and How They Work:

Stuck-On Teeth: Unlike those other drill bits with rolling parts (they call them roller cone bits), PDC bits have a head where all the cutting parts are just stuck on there, they don't move. These cutting bits are super tightly attached to the main body of the drill bit.
Diamond Cutters: These are like tiny, man-made diamonds stuck onto a really tough metal called tungsten carbide. They are incredibly hard and don't wear down easily, so the drill can just shear and scrape away at the rock.
More Like Scraping: Instead of just crushing or chipping away at the rock like those roller cone bits, PDC bits mostly work by kind of slicing or scraping it off. This makes them really good for softer to medium-hard types of rock.
Drills Super Fast (ROP): When they are drilling through the right kind of rock, PDC bits can go way faster than roller cone bits. This saves a lot of time and money.
Using the Mud: They pump special drilling liquid (they call it mud) down through the drill pipes and it shoots out of little holes (they call them jets) in the drill bit. This liquid cools the bit down, washes away all the rock bits (they call them cuttings) from the cutting surface, and carries those cuttings all the way up to the top. How they design these liquid jets is really important for how well the drill bit works.
The Body of the Bit: The main part of the PDC bit is usually made of really strong steel or another tough material called tungsten carbide matrix. This body holds all the cutters in place and has channels for the drilling liquid to flow through.

2. Why PDC Bits Are So Good:

They can drill really fast when the ground is right for them.
They usually last longer than roller cone bits in certain situations, so you don't have to pull the whole drill out to change the bit as often.
Some designs let you steer the drill better, which is important when you are drilling those complicated sideways wells.

With new and improved cutting parts and better bit designs, they can handle a wider variety of underground rock.
